“Let’s start with an MVP” means very different things to different people. To some it means a focused first release. To others it means a cheap one, built fast, to be thrown away later.
Those are not the same project. A rushed, throwaway build can create more work later, while a deliberately focused release can become the foundation of a lasting product. This article will help you tell them apart before you commission either.

1. What does MVP actually mean?
A minimum viable product is the smallest release that delivers real value to a real user. Both halves of that matter. Minimum constrains the scope. Viable constrains the quality.
An MVP does one thing properly. A user opens it, completes a genuinely useful task and reaches a meaningful result. Everything not required for that journey is left out or deliberately scheduled for later.
What an MVP is not: a demo, a trial run or software you automatically expect to discard. It may go to real users, handle real data and appear in app stores under your organisation’s name. Its security, privacy, reliability and store-compliance work must therefore match its actual users, data and risks.
The scope is small. The standard is not.
2. MVP versus prototype, proof of concept and full product
These four words get used interchangeably and they shouldn’t be. Each has a different audience, lifespan and quality bar.

The critical line runs between proof of concept and MVP. Prototypes and proofs of concept may be temporary, but they should not be quietly exposed to real customers or sensitive data. An MVP intended for real use is production software.
Confusing the two can become costly: a proof of concept is built to answer a question, then quietly shipped to customers because it seemed to work.
3. When an MVP is the right starting point
You’re not certain people want it. The strongest argument for an MVP is uncertainty. If demand is still an assumption, seek reliable evidence with the least unnecessary work.
You need something in front of users soon. A funding round, a trade show, a contract renewal, a competitor moving first.
The idea is likely to change. Real use often changes what a team believes the product needs. Building fewer features means fewer assumptions to revisit.
Your resources are finite and you want evidence before expanding. Launching with a focused scope lets real behaviour guide the next release instead of relying entirely on predictions.
The core value is concentrated in one journey. Some apps have a single obvious thing they’re for. Those make excellent MVPs.
4. When a fuller first release is necessary
Not everything can start small.
Regulatory or contractual minimums. If a regulator, a client contract or a professional body requires certain capabilities, they aren’t optional at launch. Financial and health apps often sit here.
Replacing something people already rely on. A replacement that removes essential capabilities can disrupt users and business operations. Migrations need feature parity on what genuinely matters.
The value only exists when the pieces connect. Some products are genuinely a system — a driver app that’s useless without a dispatcher dashboard, for example. Half of it delivers nothing.
One shot at a specific audience. Enterprise buyers and professional users often give you a single trial. A thin first impression can close the door.
Safety-critical or money-critical paths. Where a mistake causes real harm or real loss, the surrounding controls are part of the minimum.

5. How to identify the app’s single core journey
Finish this sentence with no “and” in it: a user opens the app in order to ______.
Then map that journey as a straight line of steps, from opening the app to the moment of value. Book a slot. Submit a claim. Log a job. Check a balance. Usually four to seven steps.
Now test each step with one question: if this step disappeared, could the user still get the result? If yes, it isn’t core. Cut it.
Two useful signals. If your sentence needs “and,” you have two journeys and should pick the one with more users behind it. And if a step exists only to make things nicer rather than possible, it belongs in version two.
What remains is your MVP. Everything else in the app supports it.

The connected path is the core journey. The surrounding ideas remain available for later releases.
6. Features an MVP still needs
This is the section that separates a focused first release from a careless one. Every item below must be considered, although the implementation should be proportionate to the app’s users, data and risk.
Security and privacy. Use encrypted connections, store credentials appropriately and keep secrets out of the app. Applicable privacy law depends on your organisation, users and markets. Apple requires developers to explain app data practices, while Google Play requires a Data safety declaration. Review the current Apple app privacy guidance and Google Play Data safety guidance.
Accessibility. Provide readable contrast, scalable text, meaningful labels and support for relevant assistive technologies. Accessibility is easier to design into the product than retrofit across every screen. The W3C publishes guidance on applying accessibility standards to mobile.
Error handling. Networks fail, servers time out, payments decline. An MVP needs to tell the user what happened and what to do next. A frozen screen is how you lose the user you spent money acquiring.
Evidence and feedback. Decide what you need to learn and use proportionate, privacy-conscious measurement. This might combine core-journey analytics, support messages, interviews and observed testing rather than collecting data simply because a tool makes it possible.
Testing. Test the core journey, failure paths and business rules. Use automation where it provides reliable repeatability, supported by appropriate manual and device testing.

7. Features that can usually wait
Almost everything else, including some things that feel essential.
Secondary user journeys. Social login beyond one provider. In-app chat and support widgets. Onboarding tours. Dark mode. Profile customisation. Notification preference screens. Multi-language support, unless you already serve those users. Offline mode, unless your users genuinely lose signal. Full admin dashboards, where a spreadsheet or existing system covers the first few months.
The test for each: does the core journey fail without it? If not, write it on the “later” list and move on.
One caveat. Skipping a feature is fine. Skipping the foundation for a feature is sometimes not. If you know payments are coming in version two, your developers should structure the app for it now, even while building none of it.
8. Why “build quickly” should not mean “build badly”
Speed and quality are often treated as a dial you turn between. For the first release of an app, that’s the wrong model.
The reliable way to move faster is to build less: fewer screens, fewer features and fewer integrations. That is a scope decision which can be documented and revisited after learning from users.
The tempting alternative is to build the same amount of software to a lower standard—skip the tests, hard-code values, mix business logic into screens and promise to deal with it later. That creates technical debt and makes every later change harder to predict.
The distinction is straightforward. Cutting scope leaves you with a small, solid app. Cutting quality leaves you with a small, fragile one, and only one of those is worth building on.
An MVP is a starting point. Starting points bear weight.
9. How AI can accelerate delivery without replacing engineering judgement
AI tooling has changed how quickly many software tasks can be completed. Used well, it can accelerate scaffolding, boilerplate, test preparation, first-pass documentation and routine refactoring. FinTaxTech uses it to make delivery more focused while keeping people responsible for the result.

Someone still needs to decide which journey is core, understand the data and regulatory boundaries, choose an architecture, review the output and remain accountable for whether the software is correct, secure and maintainable.
The practical result is that AI can make a well-planned MVP faster to deliver. It does not make an unplanned product viable. Code still needs review by someone who understands it and is accountable for it.
10. A simple MVP decision checklist
Answer these before committing to a scope.
- Can you write the core journey in one sentence with no “and” in it?
- Would a real user get real value from just that journey?
- Is anything on the launch list required by a regulator, contract or professional body?
- Are you replacing something users already depend on? (If yes, parity on essentials is not optional.)
- Does the value depend on two parts existing together, like an app plus a dashboard?
- Do you have one shot with this audience, or room to improve in public?
- Are security, privacy, error handling, accessibility, measurement and testing included in the agreed scope?
- Do you have a written “later” list, so parked features stay parked?
- Is there capacity for a version two informed by what users actually do?
- Would you be comfortable if this release were the only thing customers ever saw of your company?
If the last question makes you uneasy, the scope isn’t too small. The standard is too low.
